What is a Human Video?

A human video is acting to a song. Not a mime- it is acting in time to the music’s lyrics. Sometimes the actors lip-sync selected lyrics, and sometimes they speak them out-loud. Sounds and/or words from the dancers/actors can be added, but sparingly and thoughtfully.

As a choreographer, I have composed human videos, also called, “interpretive movements,” and “dances,” for twenty years. A favourite was written for Fresno Pacific College’s “Second Timothy,” a religious drama group of eight people that performed “Hollow Eyes” by Petra in front of 3000 Mennonite youth at a summer conference in 1990. My other favourite was with Genoa McDowell: she and I performed “Bethlehem’s Treasure,” a Hosanna Integrity song, during First Presbyterian Church’s Christmas play “How Should A King Come?” and we used colourful clothing, an English manger, and “gold” glitter (large sequins) to impart the meaning of the song to the audience. The effect was so much more than I had hoped for.

I like songs that are extremely contemporary... music that is just now reaching the christian audience, and yet, will impact an audience larger than just the teen sub-culture. What matters most here, is telling a story that is Biblically sound and offers the Truth in a package that is easily understood. Youth Pastors and Directors of Youth Ministry teams should know that the youth tend to ask me for scripts for the newest, latest songs on the radio from the newest bands, while the YM Leaders tend to ask for songs that they like which are often three or more years older, and from bands that do not have an audience base of teens, but older christians. If you want to reach your own youth and show them how to reach out to their peers, work with music that interests them, and teach them that they should focus on what is interesting to those that they are trying to reach.

It takes great effort to write the composition in terms that others can use. Human videos work well because music can bust through any language barrier whether or not the words make sense to the listener; the actions speak loud and clear. And that is point of evangelistic art isn’t it; to get the message to the audience in a package that lets God do His thing like He did with us? I do not offer these scripts in video format for a reason.

If you have any ideas or concepts for a human video- send the song title, artist name, album name, concept and an idea of the lyrics (please get permission from the record label to write them down) to me (sometimes even I can’t figure out what they are singing) and I will see what I can do. If you need one choreographed for your team, contact me immediatly and I will see what God will do. I give credit to the artists and record companies for producing the music, and you will still need to purchase that music in order to present the piece.

Lyrics are not used on an overhead because it can distract from the actors/dancers, like putting the script copy up on an overhead during a play. [Hey, that might help a skit if there are deaf people in the audience. --My deaf family prefer the term “deaf” since everyone is hearing impaired to some degree when God is talking to us-- It could be too much like “subtitles” during a foreign film, hard to read, hard to keep up with. But if only key words are chosen and done in a slide show fashion, they could keep up with the presentation and brand info. into our brains long after the presentation is over. Let me know what you think about that, ok?]

For now, lyrics are not used in any way that the audience can see. Lyrics are only for the actors to make sure that they understand the song, and can block movement to, like any script does.
